Abstract
Unequal house-sharing has been both a cause and a consequence of the ¡°great revolution¡± of gender-equal role-sharing, so many attempts have been made to identify the factors that influence housework sharing. However, existing studies focused only on factors related to the individual's economic ability, and there was a lack of research on the effects of the individual's values or attitudes. So this study aims to examine the influence of 'gender role attitude' on the share of household chores of Korean married couples. The results showed that the husband's gender role attitude had a significant effect on the husband's own and his wife's participation in housework. Husbands with a traditional gender role attitude showed less participation in their own households and a higher proportion of their wives. On the other hand, the wife's sex role attitude had no direct effect on husband and wife's participation in housework, but it was found to have an interactive effect with husband's sex role attitude. If the husband had a traditional gender role attitude, the wife's sex role attitude did not significantly affect his or her participation in the household, whereas a wife married to a husband with a non-traditional gender role attitude was found to have a different degree of participation in household chores depending on her gender role attitude. Therefore, this study suggests that policy efforts should be made to ensure that individuals have an equal gender role attitude. As a policy effort, it was suggested that service-oriented work-life balance policies, high quality child care services and parental leave should be provided, and that policies should be introduced for the purpose of raising the level of gender equality in the country.
